In today’s world, virtually every consumer business out there uses vacuum forming as part of its packaging, advertising or product construction. Like so many things in today’s world that we commonly take for granted we have no idea how they are made. It’s like they just are there, as a part of something else, or used by themselves, and often thrown away after we eat or empty the contents, such as fast food clam shells or toy packaging.

Another term used for this technology is thermo-forming which means that a plastic sheet was heated and placed over an object or mold of a shape. When a vacuum is applied, the plastic tightly takes on the inverse shape of the object in fine detail.

Were it not for these materials and this process we would have run out of forests long ago because things would have had to be made by carving them out of wood as they were since the dawn of man. Plastics, fiberglass, and thin metals have greatly expanded our options for materials used for ‘things.’

To mass produce usable items science and technology had to invent methods and machines that could consistently turn out the same product or part over and over again.

Concept of Vacuum

The concept of vacuum has been philosophically debated since the time of the Greeks. Finally a laboratory vacuum former was invented in 1648 allowing empirical study. The innovations and devices that have led to today’s industrial machines that can duplicate and materialize just about anything a person can conceive are too numerous to mention.

Another technological wonder that aids us greatly is vacuum packaging. When food is commercially processed much of it is vacuum sealed in plastic to keep the air and bacterial contamination away from it. The food does not spoil, oxidize, or go stale as quickly. When vacuum sealed foods are also frozen they can be safely stored for months. This makes long range storage, transport to far away destinations, and buying in bulk possible.

With the science and materials that are evolving now, one may speculate that soon we will eventually be able to thermo-form clothing, houses, and vehicles. We already produce, using this technology, parts of these things and more.

Science fiction writers have for years postulated that we will live in a future world where you can tell a computer what you want and a few seconds or minutes later there it is.

Today we can tell a computer what we want, input design data for a vacuum forming machine, and that information is then part of the process that creates parts, components, or movements that help build whatever it is that is to become the finished ‘thing.’

So we do it in steps now with heavy ‘human’ intervention and help. Perhaps soon the machine will do it by itself, seamlessly. Ask for the ‘thing’ and the computer will tell the vacuum forming Machine and the injection molding machine to make the parts that another machine will then assemble with all the micro-technology, and another machine will do it’s thing, then another, and another, etc..

Many wonderful inventions and technologies have contributed to the lifestyles we have and the future before us. All of these things have come from single ideas that have evolved to a point of creation. I will never look at a piece of useful plastic again without wondering about the vacuum forming machine that helped make it.
